SpringCharts Application Brief

Michael Marlow, D.O.
Family & Emergency Medicine
The Woodlands, Texas

SpringChartsTemplates and PopUp Text
Save Time and Improve Chart Quality

      Key Features & Benefits:

  • Improved Quality of Treatment
  • Rapid Template Creation
  • Improved Charting Quality

Dr. Marlow is a board certified Family Physician who practices Family and Emergency Medicine and is a partner in a three physician group at Alden Health Center in The Woodlands, Texas.

Dr. Marlow carries a notebook computer running the single computer version of SpringCharts with him into the exam room.

Dr. Marlow’s usage of SpringCharts focuses on the patient relationship, quality of treatment, quality of charting and productivity--in that order.

His typical method for an office visit is to first review the patient’s history and nurse’s notes outside the exam room. His first and last activity in the exam room itself is to interact directly with the patient. In the middle of the encounter, he uses SpringCharts for both assistance and charting. The chart is then finished outside the exam room before preparing to see the next patient.”

Dr Marlow emphasizes: “I feel it is important that the patient’s first and last impression of our relationship is our direct interaction. Importantly, the system fits nicely with the way I like to practice medicine. SpringCharts allows me to improve quality of treatment, quality of charting, and my overall productivity while building a strong relationship with my patients.”

“I have found the Template and PopUp Text
features of SpringCharts to be very helpful
in improving the quality and preparation
time of my charts."

“What makes them so effective is they are powerful, yet easy to set up. For example, when I see a patient with a situation I expect to see again, I actually prepare a Template based on the patient’s complaint, save the Template, and then I use the Template to chart the visit. It is so easy to prepare a Template that this approach requires only 1 to 2 minutes in time and I then have a Template that I can use many times over.

“PopUp Text is also very easy to update and extend while in the office visit. In fact, I have my entire set of procedures set up in PopUp Text. For example, I can easily, professionally and accurately document an onchyectomy or excisional biopsy with a click of the mouse.

“With the Templates and PopUp Text I am able to quickly prepare a record that reflects favorably on my practice. And, with the Templates I have prepared, I know when I have met the criteria for a Level 4 visit.

“During my first 2 months of using SpringCharts, I individually added 740 patients into the system. My approach has been to prepare charts as I see patients and enter their demographics and static information when I do physicals.

“The administrative staff has observed my use of SpringCharts and have commented that they would love to see an electronic solution that addresses our heavy reliance on paper charts.

“Based upon the initial success with the use of SpringCharts, and the experience one of my partners had with the SpringCharts Test Drive running on a Tablet PC, we are considering extending the use of SpringCharts to the rest of the practice. I am optimistic that Alden Health Center will benefit from a broader use of SpringCharts.”
