Statement of Commitment to Industry Standards

Spring Medical Systems, Inc. | Statement of Commitment to Industry Standards

Spring Medical Systems, Inc. (“SMSI”) supports the goal of establishing recognized standards for EMR/EHR functionality and interconnectivity and is committed to ensuring that its products are fully compatible with these standards as they are ratified. As proof of this commitment, and as and aid in fulfilling it, SMSI participates in relevant standards setting organizations as appropriate.

Organizations in both the public and private sectors are now working toward identifying the key elements necessary to ensure EMR/EHR functionality and interconnectivity.  While it is not yet clear what standards will be adopted and when, SMSI is actively monitoring all standards development efforts and integrating elements of available draft standards into our products as they become available.

SMSI Participation in Current Initiatives:
SMSI participation in Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) and other compliance efforts includes

  • Membership in Health Level 7 (HL7), a non-profit standards development organization (SDO) that is at the center of the
efforts of the Department of Health and Human Services to implement universal EMR/EHR usage within ten years.
All Spring Medical interconnectivity tools and interfaces are compliant with the latest HL7 guidelines.

    • SpringCharts currently stores data internally in HL7 format.

    • SpringCharts exchanges data with PMS systems in HL7 format.

    • SpringCharts interfaces with major diagnostic labs in HL7 format.

  • Spring Medical is a member of the AAFP Partners for Patients initiative and has committed to that group’s 4 central principals. These principles were chosen to encourage the availability of highly functional EMR solutions for its members.

  • Spring Medical is a member of the AAFP CCR Acceleration Task Force and the ASTM Committee on Healthcare Informatics (E31).

  • Spring Medical also supports a host of current standards including DICOM for medical images, and HIPAA standards for Privacy and Security.

The Electronic Health Record Association (EHRA):
The EHRA is an industry association made up of large and small companies who represent over 90% of the installed EHRs in the US today.  The association is very involved in all of the organizations affecting the future of EHRs and their use.  SMSI is very active in this organization contributing on several committees.
